Casa Pium

Vila Flor gated community — Pium, Parnamirim, Brazil · built by Podium

A house lifted above its own garden.

Casa Pium — a raised volume in exposed concrete and timber, with a sculptural stair descending to the lawn

The idea

Lifted off the ground

The house resolves into a single horizontal volume, raised off the site on slender columns. The garden runs underneath, the wind crosses freely, and the roof slab cantilevers out to shade the glazed faces.

Lifting the house solved three things at once: privacy from the street, permanent cross ventilation, and a ground level that stays garden instead of becoming a plinth.

Materials

Timber, concrete and glass

A slatted timber panel closes one side and warms the whole. Concrete is left bare on the slab and the stair. Glass, in black floor-to-ceiling frames, opens the interior onto the lawn.

Three materials, no disguise — each shows itself as it is. The finish lives in how they meet: the plumb of the slats, the sharp edge of the slab, the joint that isn’t there.

The stair

Steps that land on the grass

Access is a flight of cantilevered concrete steps, without a handrail, cascading from the raised floor until it touches the lawn.

It is the piece that gives the house its scale and the first detail you notice from the street. It demands precise formwork, controlled pouring and patient striking — there is no fixing it afterwards.

The rear

Deck, pergola and fireplace

At the back, a timber deck extends the living room outdoors, under a pergola of timber structure and glass roofing that filters the sun without closing off the sky.

The metal flue marks the outdoor fireplace, and a timber stair drops to the garden. This is the side of the house where the late afternoon is spent.
